FOREWORD

Unike this author's Conversational Ukrainian (1959; fifth enlarged edition, 1987), Urkainian for Beginners (1962; seventh revised edition, 1987), Ukrainian in Pictures (1965; second ediyion, 1978), Ukrainian by the Audio-Visual Method (1968), L'Ukrainien parle (1968-69), and Manual da Lingua Ucraniana (1976), which follow the oral approach and  treat the Ukrainian grammar rather as an explanatory adjunct, the Standard Ukrainian Grammar presents, first of all, grammar as it is used in its contemporary standard. For quick and easy learning, however, dialogues are manifoldly explored. Therefore, it is suggested that the students whenever possible memorize the dialogues while absorbing the grammar. Special attention should be paid to idiomatic expressions which are listed after the reading texts.

Standard Ukrainian Grammar is designed to dovetail with the first year university programme. It may be used for self-education by adults including senior high school students. As soon as this textbook is mastered, the first part of Conversational Ukrainian (lessons 1 to 50) may be used for a review, as well as for increasing the useful everyday vocabulary. For the continuation of learning the Ukrainian language, the author also recommendes the second part of Conversational Ukrainian (lessons 51 to 75) which, besides conversations on various topics of everyday life, presents the basic information on Ukraine, its gegraphy, population, history, literature, culture, economics, political status, etc.
